In celebration of Haitian Independence Day, January 1st, 1804; I bring the LiberTEES: Ayiti Nou La Collection. Celebrating the women of the Haitian Revolution.  

Overlooked in documented history, there were as many women as there were men who played key roles in Haiti’s complicated history and its struggle for self-rule.  The Haitian Revolution began with slave uprisings in 1791 and finally ended after much bloodshed and incredible bravery with the defeat of the French in 1803 and the declaration of Haitian independence in 1804 by Jean-Jacques Dessalines. It was to be the only successful slave revolt in history. The women that are named on this Tee;

Marie-Jeanne Lamartiniére was a Haitian soldier known not only for her courage but for her skills in battle and strategy, Cécile Fatiman, a mambo (a vodou priestess) who was instrumental in the transfer of information during the revolution, Catherine Flon was a seamstress who famously sewn the first Haitian flag, Suzanne Bélair known as Sanité Bélair was a Haitian revolutionary leader and served in Toussaint Louverture's army, Victoria Montou known as "Toya" was a fighter in Jean-Jacques Dessalines army during the Haitian Revolution, Marie-Claire Heureuse Félicité, she became the first Empress of Haiti after her marriage to General Jean-Jacques Dessalines who crowned himself emperor of Haiti on October 8, 1804.
